2012 Christmas Mantel

2012 Christmas Mantel by Sweet Pea

One of my favorite Christmas time activities is making fresh wreaths for our doors and for our living room mantel.  Mixing boxwood with various greens makes a pretty wreath with interesting texture.  To add a pop of color behind the wreath, I added a giant star painted red.

Styrofoam cones wrapped in red ribbon make a forest of bright trees.  These have been on my mantel in previous years and they’ve also been used in a few Christmas table centerpieces.

An old box filled with Magnolia branches rests on the hearth.  A fire in this room would be so cozy!

Here’s a close-up of the vintage cards on the table.  I put two cards back to back in each flower frog so that the display is pretty from either side.

The red star behind my wreath started it’s life as this:

Suzanne and I spotted a stack of these beside a trash can on an early morning run.  I knew they’d come in handy.

I look forward to seeing your Christmas mantel!

  1. What vision on that star! I never would have thought of it. I love your mantel, the colors and the greenery are my favorite.

  2. Great thinking when you saw that star besides a trashcan! I never would have thought of using it the way you did. Your mantle is beautiful! I love those trees. It’s looking a lot like Christmas around your house 🙂

    1. I spray painted one with chalkboard paint and use it at school for a message board. Right now it has the sizes and gift list for the angel that my kids are sponsoring for Christmas.

  3. Hi Paula, love the look of your mantel and the red painted star behind your wreath.

Great idea of having cards displayed in frogs.

  4. This is lovely. I’m super obsessed with your wreath. You made that? My goal for next Christmas is to make my own wreath. I am super smitten with the boxwood. And I love the depth and texture by using a variety of greens. Any tips for us fresh wreath-making virgins? Also, such a great idea to use the red star behind the wreath. Such a great pop of color.

Thanks so much for linking up to Dare to DIY!
