Mid-Century Chair Makeover

Mid Century Chair Makeover with Upholstery Last summer I shared some of my vintage furniture finds, one of which was a mid-century chair that I purchased in downtown Lynchburg from Estates Revisited.

I loved this chair’s design but the upholstery….not so much.

Mid-Century Modern Chair

I’m never one to make a decision quickly and it took me nearly a year and a half before I could find upholstery fabric for this chair that I both liked and could afford.  I finally found an inexpensive fabric at Hancock Fabric in Richmond that was reasonably priced for the yardage that I needed.

I also found a great local upholsterer who complete this project in just two days.  Not only did he do an excellent job on the upholstery, he also tightened the chair’s joints.  If you are local and need upholstery work completed, I’ll be happy to pass on his information to you.

Mid Century Chair Update

Our family room is definitely a mix of styles.  While the chair is mid-century, I think it blends well with our modern Vermont made television credenza.  Mr. SP saw this piece at Clear Lake Furniture in Vermont, couldn’t stop thinking about it, and had one made for our home.  Other pieces in the room are antique and more mid-century which I’ll share later this week.

I am so pleased with the end result of this chair makeover.  The neutral fabric is period appropriate for this chair and it blends nicely with the rug.

  1. Oo I love that chair so much! I think you picked the perfect fabric for it. It will be fun to change out the look with pillows. But I love that pillow that you put on there. Also, I would love to have your upholster’s name. I am thinking about reupholstering a couch. Thank you!

  2. I’m glad to know I’m not the only slow project tackler! Although, sometimes it pays to sit back and really be sure about a decision. Your fabric choice is perfect and will transfer easily over time through various style and color choices…so simple to change pillows. Thanks for sharing your project with us!

  3. Paula, WOW what a difference some fabric can make right? It turned out fabulous. Thanks so much for linking up to our Something to Talk About Link Party this week. You’re the best! Have a great week xo Lisa at Concord Cottage

  4. I’m so glad to see that you stayed true to the chair instead of gacking it up with white paint and making it look like something that came out of the land fill. Congratulations!

  5. I love the neutral fabric you chose! So much better now and ready to use in any room of your home. Thanks so much for sharing at Vintage Inspiration Party.

  6. Hi Paula, I’m back again to say I love your chair makeover so much I’m featuring it tomorrow morning at our Something to Talk About Link Party. I hope you can join us again for more fun, xo Lisa at Concord Cottage

    1. Thanks, Richella! I liked the chair before I recovered it and now I love it. It’s fun for me to have furniture from the early 1900’s, 1950’s, 1960’s, and the 2000’s all in the same room.

  7. Hi there! I have a very similar chair I just picked up from a neighbor’s apartment when they moved out. I couldn’t let it go into the trash! It’s got a gorgeous wood frame and only needs a light sanding and some fresh stain. The upholstery, though, is terribly dirty and stained. How much fabric (yardage) did you need for this? I will be looking for a nice timeless, neutral fabric as well, but don’t want to purchase too much in case it’s expensive. Very nice makeover.
