Basement Organization

Many bloggers have listed organization as a goal for 2011.  My house is definitely not as organized as I would like to be, but there are some areas in our house that we’ve come up with systems that work that I thought I’d share.

We have a lot of sports equipment: boating stuff, biking stuff, running stuff, tennis stuff, skiing stuff.  All of this stuff takes up a lot of space.  Mr. SP designed storage areas on walls in our basement to contain some of it.

This wall holds our biking, tennis, and skiing equipment.  To be completely honest, we both keep our tennis bags in the formal living room where they are handy.  I only hang them on this wall when company comes over!  The tennis things seen here are extras that we aren’t using now.

Our mountain bikes and extra wheels hang from the ceiling.  I am so glad that these four bikes are stored out of the way.  We don’t have a garage and bikes take up a lot of room.

Seasonal decorations take up a lot of storage space.  Mr. SP helped out with how to organize these things, too.

The Christmas tree has its own special room in the basement.

This closet holds the tree, all of our outside wreaths, and the new garland that I made for our front porch for this year.   Out of site, out of mind!

Mr. SP built shelves for seasonal decoration boxes and for his boxed models.  It’s so nice to be able to get to my boxes without having to dig them out of our crawl space attic.

(Did you notice that there are three more bikes in this picture?  The red bike is on a trainer so that Mr. SP can ride it indoors.)

I really need the top shelf space to the left.  If we could move the train to another location, I could fit bunches more boxes on the top shelf.

Tomorrow I’ll share some crafting organization on the other side of the basement.

My next organizing project will be a sewing room.  It may not be a beautiful space, but I’m hoping to make a functional space where I can sew and shut the door to hide the mess.

What are you working to organize?

  1. I think we should all band together and buy stock in the plastic containers we all use! I am partial to the see-through ones, and I put a paper label on the outside to remind myself what is in the inside that I may not be able to see.
You are a lot more organized than most. I would be proud to show off this basement!
I am making a list of items that need to go to a local auction house to get rid of clutter. Nothing great-just items that we have had that take up a lot of space.

  2. Paula, you and Mr. SP have done a great job with you basement. I love the little “room” just for tree and wreaths. It all looks so easy to find and to get to. Funny…when we lived in Va. hardly anyone had a basement. Come to think of it, we didn’t have a garage either. This was near Yorktown. I’m eager to see the other side of your basement and crafts storage! 🙂

  3. I am still trying to organize our storage room. It has also become a recording room with the new equipment that my youngest daughter got for Christmas. I’ll post pictures when I’m through. Your space looks great! Carla

  4. Paula -I envy your storage space! We do not have a basement and do not have a garage! Can you imagine!?

  5. You and I are on the same page today. 😉 I’m working on throwing a bunch of stuff out/donating/reorganizing. It’s a mess here right now!! I sooo wish we had a basement. My mom has shelves like yours in her basement…so nice to have!

  6. Awwww – organizing – one of my favorite things in the whole wide world! I love all your systems. We are blessed to have a lot of storage in our home. Putting away Christmas always inspires me to reorganize my home decor bins. Happy New Year!

  7. My goodness, you appear to have already met any organization goal you could possibly have! Seriously, I admire the way you have things organized. . . and I’m DROOLING over that Christmas greenery closet! That’s just brilliant!

You DO have a lot of sport equipment–but you really USE it! Yet another thing I admire about you. 🙂

  8. Okay, the Christmas tree closet is BRILLIANT! I love it! I wish we had a basement. I so need to take cue from you organization wizards. I’m sooo bad at it!

  9. Wow…awesome! My husband has been working on cleaning out the basement so he can build some shelves like that and we can get organized. I can’t wait!

  10. Paula, I think you did a super job on this. I wish I was half as organized!

    Happy New Year…

    XO,

    Sheila 🙂
