DIY Adirondack Chair Makeover with HomeRight (And a Giveaway!)

DIY Adirondack Chair Makeover by virginiasweetpea.com

Ten years ago Mr. SP made Adirondack chairs for our deck.  They were never stained and have taken a beating from the elements.  Mr. SP suggested that we give them away and make new ones, but I knew with a little TLC, these chairs could serve us well for a few more years.

Adirondack Chairs - Before

The chairs’ home is on the north side of our house, and as a result, they are in the shade much of the day.  The sun bleached the wood over the years and the shade caused algae to grow on some of the chairs’ parts.  I started the makeover process by scrubbing the chairs with a weak bleach solution to remove dirt and to kill the algae.

The secret weapon in my Adirondack chair makeover was a Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP Sprayer, a paint sprayer that uses a high-volume of air at a low-pressure to apply a professional looking finish.

HomeRight Finish Max Paint Sprayer

We used Behr semi-transparent waterproofing wood stain in Ponderosa Green for this project.  This stain did not need to be diluted to use in the Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP Sprayer.  We were able to set up the sprayer in very little time and practiced on a scrap piece of wood before starting on the chair.

A trigger starts and stops the flow of stain or paint and can be adjusted to spray up and down, side to side, or at a 45 degree angle.  The trigger control knob can change the spray pattern from one to six inches wide.

I couldn’t believe how quickly and evenly I was able to apply the stain with this sprayer.

My husband wanted to try the sprayer, too!

We were able to easily clean the sprayer by washing out the reservoir, filling it with water, and then spraying until all of the water was gone.

Cleaning the HomeRight Sprayer

Since we both work full-time and it gets dark by the time we are home in the evening, we completed this project over two weekends.  The first coat of stain gave nice coverage, but one more was needed to make the chairs look great.

Since using the sprayer is easy and gives immediate gratification, neither of us minded finishing this project the second weekend.

After the chairs dried, they were moved back to the deck and are ready to be enjoyed for a few more years.

Adirondack Chairs - After2

From the second we both started using this sprayer, we both were super impressed with how it works.  We once tried to use a different brand of sprayer to paint our shutters and became so frustrated with it that we gave up an painted them all by hand.  No more!  Any big paint job that we have from now on will be used with the Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP Sprayer.

The before and after is amazing, isn’t it?

We stained our deck this fall.  The task took two weekend and was worth every second of the time we spent.  We cleaned it the first weekend and stained it the second weekend.

Now for the great news, HomeRight is giving one lucky reader a Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP Sprayer!  Use the rafflecoptor to enter.  Good luck!  I can’t wait to see who wins.
