Do It Yourself Thursday

Kimba is hosting a “Do it Yourself” party for bloggers to share recently completed projects. Be sure to check out Kimba’s blog to get your weekly dose of inspiration!

I probably have one of the most “not so attractive” laundry areas around. In its defense, the room is very functional. On one side there’s the washer, dryer, and a shower. The other side has a counter with great storage underneath, a big stainless sink, and a potty. I love, love, love my basement shower because I can come in from gardening, get cleaned up, and then come upstairs fresh as a daisy. I would hate to have to walk through my house covered in dirt.

The couple that lived in our house updated this area in the 70’s. I guess the 70’s based on the lovely avocado green and harvest gold pattern that is on the laminate- like wall covering. While not so pretty, it does it’s job and is easy to clean.

I decided to make a new curtain for this room with the goal being not to have to buy anything. I found a piece of fabric in my stash that blended well with the green and gold, lining, thread, and trim. All I needed was an idea and the time to make the curtain. I thought about what I wanted to do for a few days and finally got around to making the curtain. I do much better when I have a pattern with directions to follow, but this turned out pretty well.

I really can’t believe that I’m sharing this ugly room! It’s really not worth trying to do too much to make this space attractive because it is in our basement and is not seen by guests or anyone, (until now).

Can you see my shorts reflecting? The space is so narrow that I had to sit on the washer to snap a photo.

My goal was to make this curtain look like it’s a Roman Shade. I made a few folds at the bottom and sewed them in place, but the look is lost because of the horizontal stripe.

I’m happy to have a new curtain in my laundry room. It certainly brightens the space.

  1. Oh, I like it, Paula! You did a good job of working with that space. 🙂 Great job with that fabric. Two thumbs ups. 🙂

  2. Nice job! Our laundry room is also our downstairs powder room. Nothing like having guests use the bathroom within arms reach of the washer/dryer!

  4. You did a great job. I made one of those shades a few years ago and it did not look as good as yours. Blessings to you!

  5. I LOVE THAT SHADE! It looks amazing! Great colors too!

My first and only trip {so far!} to Ikea was amazing. My couch is from Ikea and I bought it from a thrift store for $99! I love it! It was red denim until I recently bought a new slipcover for it!

Trust me when you finally visit it, you will be AMAZED! It’s soo overwhelming!

  6. Wow, that fabric and what you did with it is so amazing! I love it. That would give me “happy thoughts” every time I look at that beautiful treatment and make laundry time a pleasure. You did a fantastic job!
Thank you so much for being a daily visitor to Liz and David. Your comments mean so much to them and to me. Words can never express what your sweet comments are worth….trust me, you are helping all of us all to heal and carry forth.
    xoxo!

  7. Paula, that DOES look like a roman shade. Great job. I wish you were here to help me with window treatments. I have been wanting one in my laundry room. I still just have blinds.

In answer to your questions about my patriotic basket post, I use the baskets on the 4th of July. They usually hold red white and blue plastic silverware and napkins. Some just sit, decorating my table.

Yes, my flag print is old. I’ve had it for many years. I still see it in antique stores occasionally and the price has gone upwards! 🙂

Oh! I love the looks of your stuffed celery in your previous post. I will try that.

  8. Love your window treatment! It looks just perfect. I need to get busy on my laundry room as well. I have the fabric now I just need to find the time!:-) Have a great week and thanks for your kind comments on my blog!
