Magic Lilies

Lycoris squamigera, commonly known as Magic Lilies, Surprise Lilies, or Naked Ladies are in full bloom in my garden.  These bulbs send out masses of strapping foliage in the spring that dies back making one forget that the bulbs are under the earth waiting until the time is right to bloom.  Like clockwork, the beautiful flowers appear in late July.

The former owner of our house planted these.  I don’t know how long they’ve been in this spot, but they lived here almost 40 years and Mr. SP has been here for 17 years, so I’m going to guess that they’ve been in the ground for a long, long time.  If you want a reliably blooming bulb, this may be one that you will want to try.
