Part II – Vermont Vacation

We are home from Vermont and I have to say that it was one of our best vacations ever. We left Woodstock very early on Sunday because the northeast was predicted to get a lot of snow that day. The snow started almost as soon as we got in the car and quickly made driving conditions pretty bad. I was scared to death but Mr. SP thought it was a fine day to travel. Once we got to the Pennsylvania border the roads were fine. The trip home took 14 hours. It was long, but not terrible. We never were stopped on the highway, just had to move at a slower pace. Today is Wednesday and I’m still dragging from that long drive. Catching Mr. SP’s cold is slowing me down a little, too.

I’m going to pick up my vacation report where I left off with my last post.

Friday morning we skied until about 1 pm. We had a late check-out of 2 pm, so that gave us just enough time to get the car loaded and then start the trip to Woodstock. The skiing that day was phenomenal. I wish I could duplicate the conditions that day and have them every time I ski. By the time we left Okemo another snowstorm hit Vermont. It was a snowy drive to Woodstock!

I snapped a few pictures along the way. The first is a pretty house by a creek and the second is the Echo Lake Inn. You can click on all of the pictures to make them larger.

We’ve biked through this covered bridge on past VT trips. I can’t get enough of covered bridges.

The Woodstock Inn is my very favorite place to stay. It’s an old inn that’s comfortable and full of charm. You can walk to the downtown where there’s cute shops and restaurants or walk around the town and admire the architecture of the old homes. The inn’s golf course becomes a cross country skiing facility in the winter.

Who wouldn’t want to stay here??

When you walk in the front door there’s a fireplace surrounded by sofas and chairs. Everyone stops to warm up before they go to their room. We really enjoyed sitting by the fire at night.

One of the pretty trees inside the inn:

Beautful church beside the inn:

Both evenings that we were in Woodstock were spent hanging out at the bar in Bentley’s Restaurant. Don’t you love the decorations? It must have taken them forever to put these up.

We enjoyed long, snowy walks at night and during the day. It was a winter wonderland!

This covered bridge is in the town of Woodstock.

Here’s the view from inside the covered bridge:

Civil War Memorial:

Can you see the chunks of ice floating in the river?

Some may think it morbid to take a picture of a cemetary, but I thought this was beautiful.

Mr. SP makes another friend in a ski shop. That man has a way with dogs.

We went cross country skiing on Saturday. Mr. SP used to cross country ski to class when he was in college, so he knew how to do it. It took me a little while to catch on, but once I got it, I was in love with this new sport. We both are still sore! What a great workout.

That’s the end of our Vermont adventure. Neither of us wanted to come home, but it had to be done. If you’ve never been to Vermont, GO!! I promise that you’ll fall in love with it like we have.

  1. Hi – thanks for stopping by my blog. We were supposed to take a Fall tour of Vermont this past year but it had to be postponed until next year. Now you have me reconsidering a Winter tour. This is so lovely and just how I envisioned it. We lived in Newport, RI for a year but never got up as far as Vermont, sadly. I so enjoyed seeing your pics. It looked like you had a wonderful time.

  2. Hi Paula, Thank you for your nice compliments on my blog! I really appreciate them! Wow! Your trip looks amazing. I was dreaming of snow here in Arkansas for Christmas, but it didn’t happen. Maybe next year. I couldn’t believe all of those ornaments in the restaraunt.I bet it did take forever to put them up! Have a happy New Year!! Kristen
