A Side Dish Not to be Missed!

Have you tried turnips?  I had a feeling if I put “turnip” in my post title, a lot of people would pass by without reading.  I’m here to tell you that turnips make a mighty tasty side dish.  Read on and let me convince you.

I bought these turnips at my local farmer’s market.  They were inexpensive, five for $2.00.

Look at their beautiful color.  The smell is spicy, almost like horseradish.  I should have stored my turnips in the refrigerater.  They sat out on the counter overnight and as a result are a bit wrinkled.

To prepare turnips, start by peeling them with a normal vegetable peeler.

Slice off the stem end and then dice into cubes.

Melt a few tablespoons of butter in a skillet and sauté the turnips until they are soft and golden brown.  Add salt to taste while they cook.

Now tell me these don’t look good.

If you ask me, people who say they don’t like turnips haven’t tried them.  This is a seriously good side dish!

  2. Paula, I wish I could like turnips. I just can’t seem to make myself. I think it is because of all of the times when I was little that I bit into potatoes only to find out that they were really turnips! Carla

  3. I can’t even remember the last time I ate turnips…probably as a kid at my grandma’s. To tell you the truth, I hadn’t even thought of them in years, but I’d be willing to give them another try. They look pretty good!

  4. Never had them in my life. Do they taste anything like horseradish? Cause if they do, No Thank You!

    I’ll admit, they do look good though.

  5. I have used them in soups and stews but have never tried cooking them this way. I will definitely try it!

  6. I absolutely LOVE turnips! I haven’t been able to find any around here this year and have been so disappointed!
    Funny story: When I was pregnant I CRAVED turnips so much so that when I would get home from work I would go to our neighbors garden(across our street, it was our land we let him use it) in my dress and heels and pull turnips to eat for dinner that night! I was a sight out there!
    And when I found out I was pregnant the second time I wrapped a turnip up for husband to open to announce the pregnancy to him!

  7. I don’t know Paula…I mean, they do look good, all brown and glazy, but what do they taste like? You mentioned horseradish, which I’ve tried and don’t like. But yeah…I’d give them a try.

  8. I love raw turnips but I don’t like them cooked…I know how weird…my granddaddy had tons of these plants when I was little and I would pull them right out of the garden and eat them…never liked them cooked.

  10. While at the grocery store this morning, I spotted some turnips and I thought of the way you cooked yours. I have never seen them cooked that way before. Anyway, I bought them and sauteed them up in some butter this evening. They were absolutely yummy. We all loved them. I know that they are super nutritious also. I will cook them much more often with my new method. Thank you soooo much.

  11. Okay, okay, you got me. I’ve never tried them, but I always turn my nose up at them. What do they taste like? Prepared that way, they look similar to pan fried potatoes, which I adore!!! Do they taste anything like potatoes?

  13. So… what do they taste like? I probably ate them as a kid, my parents loved them. But if I did, it’s been a LONG time. They ate turnip greens, too.
