This Weekend’s Inherited Treasures

My favorite cousin lost her grandmother in December.  Her family has been working hard to clean out the house so that an uncle can renovate it.  This weekend I was able to visit the home and take home a few treasures.

I have very fond memories of my cousin’s grandmother as she lived next door to my cousin and I spent a lot of time there as a child and teenager.  I’m thrilled to have a few of Granny’s things.  (She wasn’t my grandmother but I called her Granny because that’s what my cousin called her.)

Granny kept this pot beside her stove to hold her spatulas and other cooking tools.  I was thrilled to add another pot to my collection, particularly because I don’t have one that is this size.  This one is now on my kitchen counter displayed with smaller pots that have a similar green color.

Granny was a fabulous seamstress and made her own clothes and also clothes for my cousin.  I wore the hand-me-downs, so I wore clothes made by her, too.  Aren’t these 70’s patterns cute?

I couldn’t resist taking this groovy tie pattern along with appliqué patterns.  The strawberry pinafore pattern reminds me of the strawberries on my “new” purse that I blogged about last week.

Granny was also a fabulous cook.  I picked these three recipe books out of a box destined for Goodwill.  I remember my mom having the Jell-O cookbook when I was a kid and I’m sure she still has it.  I always enjoy a church cookbook and they are usually full of tried-and-true, guaranteed-to-be good recipes.  I’ll probably recognize a few names, too.  The state cookbook came with a Frigidaire refrigerator.

Here are the famous dishes from four of my favorite states:

I found some jewelry treasures in a box destined for Goodwill.  My 7th graders are sure to love this groovy belt.  I have a similar one inherited from my own grandmother that they always compliment me on when I wear it.  The pins were too neat not to take.

My cousin saved this platter especially for me.  It’s now in my china cabinet on display with some glass pieces that belonged to my Granny.  I’ll always treasure this special piece.

It was a blast from the past to visit this house but it was odd to be there without seeing Granny in her chair busy knitting.  I look forward to seeing it after my cousin’s aunt and uncle restore it.  It’s a Craftsman cottage, one of my favorite styles, and it has great potential.  It hasn’t had an update since the 70’s, so you can imagine that they have their work cut out for them.

  1. You came away with wonderful goodies. I have that Joys of Jello cookbook — it was my grandmother’s. She didn’t think it was a complete meal without jello!

  2. Hi Paula! Oh, what great treasure you brought home. Love your story about your cousin’s granny. The platter is gorgeous, the green pot is gorgeous and those patterns – I may have had a few outfits like that as my mother sewed for me.
Hope you had a great weekend.
    be a sweetie,

  3. I love the treasures you got to keep. It makes them so special because you know where they came from.

Your cookbook stood out to me too because it’s from Stuart’s Draft. My dh works for Little Debbie & they have a plant there. I also grew up in WV so I notice anything near there.

I really enjoyed reading about them.

  4. Wow, you got quite a few really great items. I especially love that crystal tray and the pins. I think it’s wonderful that you have so many great memories of this lovely lady.

  5. Love the finds and family stuff is always good.

When cleaning out mom’s house, I also found many old patterns. Since the pattern paper was old, torn and musty, I opted to toss the pattern paper.

I bought inexpensive document frames, scrapbook paper and framed the pattern covers for my sewing room.
