Yard Sale Chair Makeover

Yard Sale Chair Painted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

Back in April I scored a $4.00 chair at a yard sale.  The chair was sturdy and needed no repair.  It had been painted with latex over oil and the paint was peeling in spots and the cushion needed replacing and recovering.

After I sanded the chair to get rid of the peeling blue paint, I gave it two coats of Annie Sloan Pure White paint, and then waxed it with Annie Sloan clear wax.  Buffing off the wax gave the chalk paint finish a smooth feel and very slight sheen.

The previous cushion was a very thin piece of foam and not comfortable at all.  I cut pieces of foam to the size of the wooden seat base and covered the seat by stapling the fabric to the back of the seat.

Chair Makeover - Yard Sale Find

I am really pleased with the end result of this $4.00 chair makeover!

I have another chair that I found in the trash on a morning run waiting to be sanded and then painted.  I am planning to paint that chair with AS Duck Egg Blue and perhaps distress the finish.  Are you working on any furniture makeover projects?

  1. I absolutely LOVE it!!. I’m planning to ASCP two spare dressers we now have and possibly sell them on EBay. I’ll be using AS “cream” color. Can’t wait!

    1. Thanks, Amanda. What color paint do you have? I found that the wax is equally as important as the paint. Without the wax, I really didn’t care for the surface of the paint.

  2. It’s always amazing what you can do with a little paint. I’ve yet to try the AS Chalk Paint but I’m hoping to score some at Haven for a project I’m working on!

  3. Hi Paula, Your chair looks fantastic! I have yet to try chalk paint but when I see this project, I am inspired. Have a great week!

  4. Great job , Paula! Super makeover from 4 dollars to fabulous! AS paint makes it pretty easy and the best thing I’ve found is mixing her paints to make so many colors! She even has names for those mixed colors. Looks like your staying busy and enjoying your summer break…June 😉

  5. LOVE THIS! I have a bit of an obsession with curbside chairs (thus my blog name). I have more in the wait to redo–thanks for the ideas!

  6. Love it..it;s gorgeous!
Can I ask where you got the fabric..been looking for something like this for so long..it would be perfect!
    Thanks!

    1. Riona – I purchased the fabric last year on-line and I can’t find the name of it or the source. Sorry!
