Hibiscus – A Prolific Bloomer

Hibiscus - Summer Bloomer - virginiasweetpea.com

A few days ago I noticed that my hibiscus is blooming and is so pretty.  I planted this almost 20 years ago and it comes back each year no matter how hard the winter.  I love its big showy pink blooms that last just a day.  The blooms open in the morning and by late afternoon have closed and will fall off the next day.

This plant is in one of my lower flower beds but is easily noticed by neighbors walking by because of its color, large bloom size, and the number of blooms on the plant at one time.

The buds of the hibiscus almost look like a rose.

Note the pollen that has fallen into the flower.  I also like the vein pattern that can be seen in the leaves.

Hibiscus is deer resistant in my yard making it a winner in my garden!

I once had a red one in another flower bed that disappeared.  Either it died or I dug it out in the spring thinking it was a weed.  Do you grow hibiscus?

  1. Paula your photos are beautiful!
We have had two hibiscus trees that we bring in over the winter and set out on the back patio in the spring after the frost warning is over… this year they didn’t come back, one is totally dead and the other looks like we should be planning the funeral!! So glad to see yours thriving so beautifully!

    • Sweet Pea says:

Thanks, Cynthia! It’s a shame that you lost one of your trees and that the other doesn’t look so good. At least it is two fewer things that you will have to move!

  2. Absolutely gorgeous! I do not have a green thumb…wish I had yours! Have a great week.

Thanks, Leslie! I think my green thumb was inherited from both of my grandmothers. Farming is in my blood as well!

  3. Paula, your photography is gorgeous. You are so fortunate to be able to grow hibiscus in your garden. I live in a dry climate that gets pretty chilly during the winter planting this flower is out of the question. I have grown it indoors as an indoor plant. You are so correct that it is a perpetual bloomer! Take Care, Thea

    • Sweet Pea says:

Thanks, Thea! I have good luck with outdoor plants but if they live inside with me, they don’t fair quite so well. :)

  4. These are beautiful Paula! I love that color! I am also impressed by the hardiness of these plants. My father-in-law planted some in our garden (unbeknownst to me) and it has been a lovely surprise year after year to see them bloom and grow!

    • Sweet Pea says:

What a great surprise for you, Megan! I’m sure the first year you saw those blooms that you were quite impressed.

  5. I just love these perennial Hibiscus with the dinner-plate size blooms! What a show!

  6. I love hibiscus, but can’t grow them in Minnesota. At least, not for more than one season. So jealous!

    • Sweet Pea says:

I would imagine that there are a lot of plants that you can grow in Minnesota that I can’t in Virginia. I’d love to visit your state one of these days.

  7. Love the photos. I wish my hibiscus would over winter. I have to treat it as an annual. Carol

    • Sweet Pea says:

I didn’t know when I planted it that it would come back in Virginia. It was a nice surprise to see it the next year.

  8. Beautiful flowers!

  9. I have a hibiscus and I love it too! It’s pretty hardy and gets a LOT of sun. Yours is gorgeous! I wondered where you live to be able to grow it. I’m in Southern California and they grow easy – mine is in a pot on my deck. I don’t have the deer problem, but that’s a good thing to know! Becky

  10. Beautiful!

  11. I am in Hawaii right now so can really appreciate the hibiscus…thanks for sharing Paula!

  12. It is beautiful, love those huge flowers! I need one.

  13. Yours are beautiful. I lost mine last year not sure to what. Used to be a prolific bloomer.

  14. My neighbor has these beautiful flowers growing between our homes and I love walking by them with my dog every day. Your’s are a gorgeous color and they remind me of cheerful summer days. Thanks for sharing!
