Spring Wreath

It’s not quite spring, but I was tired of the winter wreath that I on my porch, so I crafted a new one.

Even though it is officially still winter, seeing this wreath each day when I come home gives me hope that spring is almost here.




It didn’t take long to craft this wreath because the yo-yos were left over from a long ago project.  I found a fat quarter of coordinating fabric from my mother-in-law’s fabric stash and cut it into 2 inch strips using a quilting ruler and rotary cutter.


I glued one end of the strip to the wreath and wrapped, gluing again when I got to the end of the strip.


After I added the second strip, you can see that the strips began to overlap.  Doing it this way keeps the fabric smooth.


A third strip covers a bit more…


A fat quarter of strips covered the wreath exactly with no extra at all.


I then glued on the yo-yos in pleasing pattern.  (Click here for a yo-yo tutorial.)


I didn’t have any ribbon on hand that coordinated with this wreath, so I went back to my mother-in-law’s fabric stash to see what I could find.  I found several pieces of fabric that matched perfectly that she must have used to bind a quilt at one point or another. 

I stacked two of the pieces, looped them around the wreath, tied a knot, trimmed the ends and I had a coordinating bow.




Are you wondering why I had yo-yos on hand?  Long ago I decorated the back of a sweatshirt in a design similar to the one shown below.  I spend hours hand sewing yo-yo after yo-yo.  I used a white sweatshirt cut up the front to make a cardigan.  I trimmed each side of the cut edges on the front with fabric.  For the back, I used fabric to form a flower pot and then I hand sewed on the yo-yos to make the flowers.  In between the flowers, I hand sewed green rick-rack to make stems.  My creation was so 1990’s gorgeous!  Then I washed it and the fabric that I had not prewashed bled all over the sweatshirt, ruining it.  All that work down the drain!  Live and learn!  My sweatshirt inspiration was found in the box with the leftover yo-yos.  Fashion sure has changed!
