Flour Sack Fall Inspired Pillow

Flour Sack Fall Inspired Pillow by virginiasweetpea.com

As summer changes to fall, it’s time change our décor to go along with the season. An easy-to-make pillow crafted from inexpensive flour sack kitchen towels can make a great fall addition to your living room, bedroom, or porch.

My fall themed flour sack pillow combined with faux pumpkins, dried gourds, a wool throw, and a fall mat create a pretty vignette on my porch.  (Confession time – This article originally appeared in Clutch, a fabulous local magazine.  I encourage you to click over to view the on-line version.  I {heart} this magazine and am thrilled to be published in it.  This vignette was photographed in June.  I’m eager to pull my fall things back out now that it’s fall for real!)

This pillow is super easy to make.  I’m looking forward to making a few more for different holidays.

How to Make a Flour Sack Pillow

Fall Pillow Supplies

Supplies Needed

2 Flour Sack Kitchen Towels

Iron-On Transfer Paper

Desired Images

Sewing Machine

Disappearing Ink Fabric Marker

1.  Find a fall image and save to a Word document, being sure to reverse the image, if necessary.  I used images from The Graphics Fairy.  Print images on transfer paper and cut out.

Trim Pictures

2.  Wash, dry, and iron two flour sack kitchen towels.  Since this material is thin, place one towel on top of the other and fold in half.

3.  Iron on images to one side of folded towels.

Iron Transer

4.  Using a fabric marker that fades without washing, mark in 2 inches on the long edges and 4 inches on the short edges on the back side of the folded towel.

Draw lines on Back of Pillow

5.  Mark an opening for stuffing with two pins.

Mark Area to Leave open with Pins

6.  Stitch on the lines being sure to leave an opening for stuffing.

Sew Around Edges

7.  Trim the edges 1 1/2 inches from the stitched line.

Trim Sides

8.  Stuff the pillow and stitch closed.

I’m getting in the fall mood just from looking at these pictures.

Flour Sack Fall Inspired Pillow

This project is perfect for a beginning seamstress and would make a nice gift.  It would be fun to make a personalized pillow with a child’s picture for a grandparent gift or make a pillow with a pet’s picture for a friend or family member.  I’m planning to make a version for Halloween, too!

  10. Paula, I just love this! I pinned it. Also, I featured you at this week’s Grace at Home party. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to copy any of the photos for the feature (photos with the pinning feature built in will not allow copying and pasting). Maybe you could include one watermarked photo that does NOT have that feature? Then I could copy and paste that one into my post so that people could see the feature. I would love to send more traffic to see your darling pillow!
