Thrifted Stool Makeover

Thrifted Stool Makeover by virginiasweetpea.com

Who doesn’t love a good before and after makeover project?  I recently gave a thrifted stool a new life with paint and a fun stenciled top.

Let’s take a look at this stool’s before picture.  The stool had never been painted and had a slightly warped top, but since it was quite sturdy, I couldn’t pass it up for just a few dollars at my favorite thrift shop.

Before - Stool Makeover

The makeover started with applying two coats of AS chalk paint in pure white followed by wax.  I love the sheen and soft feel that wax gives a piece painted with chalk paint.  To add some bling to the top of the stool, I stenciled a fun pattern with gold paint.  You might remember this stencil from my side table makeover.

Metallic paint isn’t easy to photograph.  Outside the gold looks dull, but trust me, it’s bright and cheerful.

Stool Makeover

This stool makeover didn’t take long and cost $0 since I had all of the supplies on hand.

I’m glad I could give this stool a new look.

  1. I love the stool. You wouldn’t know it was the same piece. You are so right about photographing metallic paint. It’s really hard for me….I didn’t know if anyone else had the same problem. Have a great weekend!!

    1. Kathleen – The wax Annie Sloan in clear. I wipe it on with a cloth, let it dry, and then buff it with another cloth. Chalk paint feels chalky (duh 🙂 ) without the addition of wax.

  2. From ordinary to extraordinary! I love the gold and white together, very classy!
Do you put the gold on after the wax? Does it stay on? I’ve never tried chalk paint and wax so I imagine the wax would go on last to seal it all in, but then would that stop the gold from shining? However you did it, it looks lovely.

  3. Love it! Love it! I would love it if you joined and contribute your awesome posts at my link party at City of Creative Dreams on Fridays 😀 Hope to see you there at City of Creative Dreams Link Party
